At the end of each academic year, the new Law Review Committee administers the Unified Writing Competition, which tests each student`s ability to write legal arguments, edit citations in accordance with the Blue Book, and format them. Participation in the Unified Writing Contest is required for all potential members. In addition to our tightly supervised first-year first-year course and advanced legal writing courses for JD and LL.M. students, the Center supports the development of individual students throughout their legal careers. The two writing courses for LL.M. The students – Advanced Writing Workshops I and II – have a program specifically tailored to the needs of returning and international students. First-Year Lawyering & Legal Writing is a two-semester course taught in small sections, each consisting of only eight to sixteen students. Legal Writing I focuses on the basic principles of writing, language use, organization and case reading; legal analysis, case synthesis and ethics in informative legal drafting; manual and computer-assisted legal research methods and skills; and actual collection and interview exercises. Legal Drafting II, which involves a class visit to an appellate court, emphasizes writing skills and the ethics of advocacy through negotiation exercises, process design, and strategy.
The course concludes with an exercise in vocational shorthand and advocacy development. – Earn a maximum of 30 credit hours of the credits required for the Cardozo J.D. of previous legal studies in a foreign country. The total number of appropriations authorised shall be determined on an individual basis. In 2007, Professor Newman founded the Lawyering & Legal Writing Center to bring together a wide range of services under one roof, including the center`s first-year lawyer and legal writing course, workshops and advanced writing courses, academic support services, skills workshops, writing consultants for various programs, and the center`s judicial appeal advocacy conferences. In 1985, Professor Leslie Newman took over the direction of what is now the Lawyering & Legal Writing Center, and under her direction, the program evolved from a course to a program to a full-fledged center. When Dean David Rudenstine was appointed to his position in 2001, he reinforced the Law School`s commitment to legal writing by focusing the program on extremely small seminars taught by practicing practitioners. This is still one of the main features of legal writing courses in Cardozo.
Students interested in joining one of Cardozo`s six journals as part of the annual writing competition should contact the Cardozo Law Review. The Lawyering & Legal Writing Center provides Cardozo students with in-depth instruction in advocacy, research, and legal writing. The center supports the development of individual students throughout their careers at the Faculty of Law by offering a closely supervised first-year course as well as advanced writing courses tailored to the needs of JD and LL.M. students. Clear and concise writing is a powerful tool for achieving excellence in law school and advocacy. The Center for Lawyers and Legal Writing provides Cardozo students with in-depth instruction in legal writing, research, legal analysis, and legal skills. In 2015, Dean Melanie Leslie re-engaged Cardozo in legal writing as a cornerstone of the school`s academic program. Teaching legal writing has been one of Cardozo`s main responsibilities since the school was founded by Yeshiva University in 1976.
Since that time, the school`s mandatory course in lawyer and legal writing for first-year law students has been an important feature of every Cardozo student`s legal experience. Ten percent of invitations to the Law Review are awarded to students who (i) maintain the best first-year grade points averages and (ii) score in the fiftieth percentile or higher of the Unified Writing Competition. Class rank is used as a determining factor for all other students. Given the magazine`s commitment to diversity, the journal will award fourteen percent of its invitations to students who have been holistically reviewed by the Equity and Inclusion Committee based on the results of their unified writing competition, class ranking, and personal statement. The committee is composed of four elected students, the editor-in-chief and the editor-in-chief. A professor or administrator will join the committee for the specific purpose of issuing these invitations. Higher-level courses vary from year to year, and new offerings are added to the program in response to student interest and global and national events impacting the law. In addition, second- and third-year students can take one graduate course in law per semester at the New School, which is a short walk from the Cardozo Gate, and graduate courses offered by other Yeshiva University schools. The school offers a traditional law degree consisting of 84 academic credits obtained over three years.
