Emerging company: deli boards are on the rise Fairway`s March auction allowed five of its most respected units — those serving Manhattan, including the flagship of the Upper West Side — to go to village supermarkets, Springfield, New Jersey-based operator ShopRite, and a member of the Wakefern Food Coop. Village has also acquired the Fairway brand and will soon be the only company to use this name. Other units auctioned off include the Key Food Stores Cooperative`s Fairways Georgetown Brooklyn. This unit is now operated as a food route. Amazon has acquired two closed Fairway stores in New Jersey that could eventually be part of that company`s evolving food concept. Other large supermarket chains such as Aldi, which has no branches in Stamford, are not restrictive on location. The number of supermarkets in the U.S.
fell 1.3 percent last year to below 25,000 due to the closure of SuperValu, Southeastern Grocers and Tops stores, according to Inmar Analytics. The number of U.S. supermarkets will decline by 6% over the next five years, Inmar Analytics predicted. Stop & Shop — which operates Connecticut`s largest supermarket chain, including two stores in Stamford — is also not in the running. A company spokesperson said that “we currently have no plans to expand Canal Street.” Recent history is full of retailers emerging from Chapter 11, only to quickly file a second application. Many of them were liquidated and ceased their activities. RadioShack, Payless Shoes, Gymboree and American Apparel have all followed this path to closure. The official opening of the 75,000-square-foot ShopRite supermarket is expected to take place when the complete renovation is completed later this fall.
Despite the renovations, the store is open to shoppers. Fairway Market, the one adjacent to Harlem`s West Side Highway, was to be sold as part of Fairway`s bankruptcy plan. Fairway isn`t the only struggling supermarket in the low-profit food industry. Lucky`s Market, a Colorado-based organic chain in which Kroger had a stake, announced this week that it would close more than 30 stores. Despite supermarkets` lack of interest in the 699 Canal — at least in the form of public statements — many residents and local officials would still like to see another grocery store replace Fairway. And Fairway, which says it intends to stay in business, is not ensuring its survival. Yonkers` Brooke Stachyra feels the same way. “I was shocked when I saw the new sign,” she said. “I`ve been going to this fairway for many years. I especially liked the bakery, the olive bar and the cheese section.
I just hope I can get the same specialty products at affordable prices, but I doubt ShopRite has the wide range of beauty, skincare, and vitamin products that Fairway had. “I just went to Harbour Point and I love what they`ve done to the whole area,” Stew Leonard Jr., president and CEO of the family-owned company, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “But how could I get close to 100,000 people there every week? I`d still like to open a Stew Leonard`s Wines & Spirits store in the northern half of Stamford, but we haven`t found the right location yet. “New York, Chicago and Los Angeles are the three most expensive food markets. It`s really important that family-owned chains like Fairway succeed. A COVID-19 testing centre opened in part of the building earlier this year, but most of the structure still appears empty. Availability would pave the way for another large tenant like a grocery store — but several of the supermarket chains operating in the area have ruled out the property as a new location. Fairway Market is an American grocery chain founded in 1933 by Nathan Glickberg. [1] It is currently one of the store banners of Wakefern Food Corporation, a company known for its flagship supermarket collaboration network, ShopRite. [2] High-end grocer Fairway Market, which is currently bankrupt under Chapter 11, has agreed to sell two New York stores to Bogopa Service Corp., which operates Food Bazaar supermarkets in the New York metropolitan area.
