Local legend has it that an elderly woman caught a nine-pound largemouth bass in Roseland Lake, but most yellow perch weigh between one and three pounds. They are productive broodstock and can quickly pass a lake. They have a short shelf life and are low in the food chain, so they tend not to accumulate harmful chemicals in their bodies. Selectively removing small fish (and legal small perch) from the population IMPROVES growth rates, which can actually help increase the number of large fish eventually produced in the lake. Possession is illegal for: sturgeon (all species), American lamprey, Atlantic salmon, bridle, burbot, eastern silver minnow, lake minnow, long-nosed sucker and northern red-bellied dace. If they are caught, they must be released immediately. This means removing the hook or chives and immediately putting the fish back in the water – don`t wait to take pictures, use silt, stick it in a net or otherwise delay the immediate return and release of these rare fish! The lake is said to be good for black crappie, just for large mullets, chain pike, yellow perch and sunfish. The limit for crappies is ten. Licensed fishermen can legally take bait for their personal use at any time. These methods include a rectangular net of no more than 36 square feet of net area, a circular or annular net not more than six feet in diameter, or a fish trap with openings of not more than one inch. Nets intended to catch fish by the gills are not used.

For personal use as bait, dead or alive, licensed fishermen are only allowed to catch these species: CT State fishing regulations apply. For more information, see the CT Fisherman`s Guide. Fishing licences are required and CT DEEP enforcement personnel regularly inspect the lake. Catching and releasing is encouraged, especially for large trophy-sized fish, at least until July each year. This motivates other anglers, keeps a large predator active, and reduces the potential to eat a fish that may have accumulated harmful chemicals. Keep only legally sized fish – the limit for bass is 12″ and above. Each spring, the pond is stocked by CT DEEP with 900 catchable brown and rainbow trout. Trout do not hold due to their limited depth.

2 Trout is defined here as brown, brown, rainbow and tiger trout (a cross between a female brown trout and a male brown trout). From April 1 to September 10, no more than 8 of these trout can be caught daily, and only 3 of these trout can come from lakes, ponds or large rivers3. The CT Angler`s Guide 2015/2016 incorrectly states that there is a fee for access to Roseland Park and that there is boat paint – this is not the case.

All anglers are allowed to have up to five hooks in the ice at the same time. A hook is defined as a fishing device attached to the leash of a tipping stick or jig and designed to pick up a fish. These include simple hooks, triple hooks, spinners, spoons, bait harnesses, jigs or plugs. The device is not limited to a single hook – baits with multiple triple hooks count as one hook in the water. 7 American shad is ONLY captured and released on all waters except the Connecticut and Merrimack rivers, including their tributaries. 1 Minimum length is measured in a straight line (not curved on the body) from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail. The ends of a forked tail can be compressed for final measurement. Access is through Roseland Park, which is open from sunrise to sunset and has an unimproved boat launch. There is access for motor and non-motor boats. Electric motors are preferred. Since there are no known aquatic invasive species on the lake, it is IMPORTANT that anglers be careful not to introduce them. Anglers must be able to maintain their own tip-ups or size sticks.
